After her retirement, in 2003, from the Graduate Program in Social Sciences in Development, Agriculture and Society (CPDA/UFRRJ), Silvana De Paula continued to be an associate faculty of this interdisciplinary program. She also joined the Graduate Program on Public Policies, Strategies and Development (PPED/UFRJ) as a guest professor, and the Program of Studies and Research on Gender, Sexuality and Health (CLAM/IMS/UERJ) as associate researcher. Her degrees include a Maîtrise en Linguistique, a Master’s in Social Sciences in Development, Agriculture and Society, and a PhD in Sociology. As faculty, she has taught and advised master’s and doctoral students, and has coordinated research projects, Lato Sensu Graduate Programs, as well as national and international academic seminars. She was a visiting scholar at the Department of Anthropology/Rice University for the school year of 1996-1997. Silvana’s teaching, research and publications have focused on the following topics: Brazilian social thought; relations between countryside and city in Brazil; contemporary cross-cultural phenomena; global studies; ethnicity, nation building and politics of modernity; gender, sexuality and reproductive rights; and contemporary civil society organizations and movements. She has undertaken several projects with the Brazilian Institute for Social and Economic Analyses (IBASE), including studies on the Rio Conference of 92, and the World Social Forum events of 2003 (Brazil), 2004 (India), and 2006 (Venezuela). Silvana is currently a visiting scholar at the Center for Ideas and Society/UCR, and a member of the Executive Committee of the Latin American Studies Program/UCR.
