Maria Papanikolaou

Artist-Sculptor based in Athens. Author of the site Jail Break Art

Maria is the latest member of the Vital Space team. She uses a variety of art media in order to redefine the concept and visual representation of prison. She has taken part in several exhibitions in Greece and The Netherlands, some of them are listed below:

2013:“Afresh” Group Exhibition, National Museum of Contemporary EMST, Athens.

2011: Master of Fine Arts – graduation exhibition, ASFA, Athens.

2008: “Art-ID”, KunstVLAAI, Amsterdam, collective exhibition.

2008: “BloodlessWarGame”, Filmhuis, The Hague, solo exhibition.

2006: “Pitch”, Expodium, Utrecht, solo exhibition.

Education/Artist Training:

Studied Law at the National & Kapodistrian University (2000-2005).

-Moved to The Netherlands in 2004 to study Fine Arts at the Royal Academy of Arts, acquiring a Bachelor of Arts in 2008.

-Completed a Master of Fine Arts program at the Superior School of Fine Arts in Greece (2009-2011).

Current activities:

PhD student since March 2012 at the Athens School of Fine Arts, Department of Theory and History of Art.
